A Look At Sony's Latest Offer - The Xperia XZ2 Series

March 14, 2018 Android New Launch News Sony

Sony has taken a bold step forward in design for the latest Xperia XZ2 series. The pair comprising of XZ2 and XZ2 Compact looks very different from its predecessors. They boast a new extra-tall screen aspect ratio of 18:9 which is quickly becoming an industry standard and a FullHD resolution. The top and bottom chins are now significantly thinner. Both phones also have a distinctive curve to them and this is more evident on the Compact version.

The major difference between XZ2 and XZ2 Compact other than the feel and look is mostly their back panels; the larger Xperia XZ2 is clad Gorilla Glass 5 from front to back making it a fingerprint magnet whereas the smaller XZ2 Compact has a glossier polycarbonate backside which stays smudge-free.

XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are both powered by the beastly Snapdragon 845 chipset. HDR support has been added to the new panels and video recording. Display panel wise, the screen still uses the IPS LCD technology instead of the popular OLED. For the controls on the XZ2 & XZ2 Compact, they remain largely the unchanged. The camera module and the fingerprint reader are placed nicely along the central axis of the curved back for both models for symmetry. Other than those, the hybrid SIM and SD card trays on the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are as usual not separated.

Sony has also decidedly made a bold move to remove the 3.5mm audio jack. Every XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will ship bundled with a Y-style Type-C dongle which permits charging and audio out at the same time as a form of mitigation.

Both models have the same primary camera - 19MP 1/2.3" Sony IMX400 camera, f/2.0 lens - just as with the Xperia XZ1. The coveted 960fps slow motion video capture mode is now available in 1080p mode other than 720p.

XZ2 comes in uniquely named colours in Liquid Black, Liquid Silver, Deep Green (Petroleum Blue) and Ash Pink while XZ2 Compact is available in Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink.
