Huawei Mate 10 Pro makes an affordable phablet alternative to Galaxy Note 8 and iPhone X. Design wise it is very close to its predecessor Huawei Mate 10; the same mixed metal and glass outlook. The glass back is very scratch resistant.
Hardware wise, Mate 10 Pro does not come with a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is a fast and reliable fingerprint scanner located just below its dual Leica cameras. Unlike Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro uses a 6-inch HD+ HDR 10 OLED screen and is vibrant without being oversaturated. Screen resolution is at 2160 x 1080 pixels.
The Emotion UI on Huawei Mate 10 Pro now has a reduced number of bloatwares and is using the latest Android 8 Oreo. That said, it is still far from vanilla Android. EMUI is still pretty unintuitive with hard to find options.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro has an AI-infused Kirin 970 processor and 6GB RAM. The 8 core CPU comes with neural processing unit that adds ‘AI’ features. This capability allows the phone to learn and predict your usage to pre-emptively modify and launch applications according to your specific needs, as well as shutting down unnecessary processes for energy saving.
Battery life is excellent for the Mate 10 Pro. With a 4000mAH cell, the phone can last one and half to 2 days of on a full charge with a regular use of listening to music during daily commute, watching Netflix, taking and making calls, constant texting on WhatsApp, browsing social media etc.
Camera is rather impressive with an improved camera app UI; more intuitive and significantly faster than on past Huawei phones. With a wider f/1.6 aperture, the addition of OIS along with underlying software improvements, photos taken under low lighting conditions are good enough for social media. Notwithstanding for these, the colours can distort in mixed light conditions and the autofocus can go a little off in difficult lighting.
